Another Victory for the Golden Gate against cell towers!

IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE DELIGHT AND GRATITUDE,  I want to let you know the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church rescinded their authorization for Verizon to establish a cellular base station on the church!
The church heard presentations by local electrical engineers and neighbors expressing our concern. Therefore, City of Oakland dropped the plan!

Thank you Star Bethel and Dr. E.J. Ward! Thank you to all those in the community who offered their efforts; combing through the latest research and letting us know why this project would be so detrimental to the health and safety of our community.  We worked closely with the church and each other.   Congratulations to the Golden Gate Community! Yes, prayers and  hard work.

Will Verizon give up on this area, my guess is NO.

Come to the Golden Gate Library at 2 pm, Saturday, 10/28, tomorrow.  Instead of preparing for the Planning Commission, let's talk about what worked, talk a big exhale and toast to a victory for our neighborhood. We want to honor the church for their decision and show our gratitude.  Let's talk about how we can protect our neighborhood before another cell plan lands in our front yard.

See you then!

GOOD NEWS!  Governor Brown vetoed SB 649

Thanks to lots of hard work; faxes, phone calls, expert testimony, and  demonstrations!

http://www.mercurynews.com/…/california-gov-jerry-brown-ve…/
Grass-roots activists and scientists said that if SB 649 became law, a projected 50,000 new cellular antennas would be installed on public buildings and utility poles in California neighborhoods, creating a risk to public health because of the dangers of radiation and electromagnetic frequencies emitted by cell towers.

The Verizon plan for a large cell antenna base station on the roof of Star Bethel church has moved forward and will be presented to the City of Oakland Planning Commission for approval on November 1st at 6:00 pm at City Hall.

The Planning Commission will approve this plan unless they hear from YOU!
  • The Planning Commission hearing is the community's chance to voice opposition to a plan that is; unsafe, intrusive and incompatible with the Golden Gate neighborhood.
  • When neighbors show up in a large organized group to the Planning Commission, it does make a difference.
  • Whatever issues we bring up at the Planning Commission,  will go to the City Council if we choose to appeal.

      Things to do:
  1. Come to the meeting to prepare for the Planning Commission this Saturday October 14th at The Golden Gate Library meeting room at 2:00pm. ( If you can't make this meeting but can be at the Planning Commission email me so we can get a count.)
  2. SAVE the DATE:  Planning Commission hearing on November 1st at 6:00 pm at the City Council chambers at City Hall.

Thank you for opposing the latest Verizon cell installation and supporting health and safety in the Golden Gate neighborhood!

After the community presentation Verizon has moved the plan ahead, as we knew they would. It is now on the calendar will come up for approval to the Planning Commission on  Wednesday, November 1st at 6:00pm

The Planning Commission either approves the plan or asks Verizon to make changes.

Please save that date, and plan to attend, Wednesday November 1st at 6:00pm. An organized community presence does make a difference.  In order to make our case in front of the commissioners we need people to either speak or to sign up to speak and offer your minutes to those of us ready to speak.

To prepare we are having an organizing meeting Saturday, October 14th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Golden Gate Library meeting room.

Bring all that energy we saw last Tuesday, to this meeting!

We will look at talking points for community members for the Planning Commission hearing and next steps.

Thank you!

Come out Tuesday, September 26th at 6:30
Charles Porter Golden Gate Community Recreation Center

Saturday, September 9, 2017

WE NEED YOU!  A meeting time has been set with Verizon, the City of Oakland and the community.

Tuesday, September 26th at 6:30 pm
Charles Porter Golden Gate Recreation Center 1075 62nd Street Oakland
(behind the baseball field off San Pablo)

We will have a presentation on the negative health effects this large cell antenna installation will have on our community. A group question and answer session will follow.

Golden Gate Community Association took the initiative to  organize a community meeting. Verizon cancelled the first meeting at the last minute.  We met anyway!   Golden Gate Community Association asked to be kept up to date on Verizon's "revisions" to the plan and made  numerous requests to collaborate on the next community meeting.  Here is David Haddock's response, (representing  Verizon).  Instead of a community meeting where a group discussion takes place, he is planning a "neighborhood workshop"!

"Ms. Yaffe,

Verizon Wireless appreciates your interest in the project.  We are holding the neighborhood workshop to create a collaborative forum for open dialogue with the community.  At that time, community members will have the opportunity to speak directly with Verizon engineers, representatives, and independent 3rd-party experts one-on-one about any questions, concerns or general comments they may have about the proposed facility's design, location, how wireless technology works, electromagnetic emissions from the facility in accordance with FCC guidelines, wireless user trends, etc.

The neighborhood workshop will be held on September 26 @ 6:30 p.m. at 1075 62nd Street, Emeryville, CA 94608 (Golden Gate  Recreation Center).  The notices are being finalized and will be sent out in the next day or so. "

Thanks,
 David Haddock

Verizon is attempting to block our access to information and our ability to organize! We have seen it before!  The best response is to show up.

See you there!

California Stop Senate Bill 649

Forwarded from Josh Hart:
If you live in California, see below for urgent action to take to stop SB649.
If you live outside California, please pass this message on to CA residents for immediate action.
Proposed bill SB 649 will allow the wireless industry to install large, noisy and hazardous cell tower equipment on all utility poles and street lights in every neighborhood throughout the State - with NO public input! These could start showing up soon right outside YOUR home or your child's school - unless you take action NOW to call your elected representative and tell them to VOTE NO on SB 649.

In spite of the opposition from almost 300 cities in the State and many environmental and social justice organizations.....it appears as if this bill is about to pass the vote in the full Assembly (which could happen as early as Wed or Thurs of this week).

Please CALL your State Assembly member and tell him/ her to Vote NO on SB 649!

1. email (from their website) your Assembly member to oppose SB 649, and
/or

2. find the phone number for the Assembly member's DISTRICT office on the member's website and make a call to the district office to urge your Assembly member to Vote NO on SB 649.

Here is a good website with more information:

See also this fact sheet "8 Reasons to Vote No on SB 649" published by the CA Alliance for Safer Technology.

Thank you for taking action to show that California will not be irradiated without resistance.

Golden Gate Neighbors Against Cell Antennas

Say NO to the latest Verizon plan for a 12 cell antenna installation on the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at Stanford and San Pablo

                 Cell Antennas Make Bad Neighbors

  • Health Risks.  People living, working and worshiping in the neighborhood  will be exposed to microwave radiation 24/7. The adverse effects from cumulative long term radiation exposure include cancer.
  • Federal regulations ignore the hundreds of studies that find harmful bio-effects from long-term exposure to non-thermal levels of cell phone radiation.
  • Verizon profits while dumping health, environmental, and financial costs onto us.

We all have the right to live in a safe community. Until it can be unequivocally stated that cell antennas are safe for people and animals we do not want them in our neighborhoods. Using the precautionary principle, the public must be protected from exposure to harm when scientific investigation has found a plausible risk.

Sign up for our email list at Golden Gate Neighbors Against Cell Antennas
We will be having an upcoming community meeting with in Sept. to with Verizon reps, and City staff,  a planning commission meeting, and other events.  Stay tuned!

WE have defeated Verizon before!

Together we have the power to protect our neighborhoods!

Here's a post from a community member Jenny Miller on the bill SB 649 making it's way through the Appropriations Committee.  Please read, listen  and take action!

URGENT ACTION ALERT!
A CELL TOWER IN FRONT OF EVERY FEW HOUSES ON YOUR BLOCK,
an antenna on most light poles, surveillance capabilities handed to the government--all coming our way, unless people in CA start taking action to stop this bill, SB 649. It would take away the authority of local governments to have any say about 5G wireless technology, or the siting of these mini (but ultra powerful) cell towers.
Studies have shown that people who live near cell towers have a much higher death rate than others in their community, and now we ALL will be living near cell towers. 5G is much more harmful than even previous wireless technologies that the studies are based on. In addition to cell tower linked deaths, there are thousands of studies showing a variety of harmful health effects from our current wireless technology (including brain fog, dizziness, nosebleeds, severe head pains, heart pain and palpitations, ringing in the ears, etc.) If implemented, this bill would greatly increase both the occurrence and the severity of these symptoms, incapacitating large numbers of people
One more hearing to go in the assembly (Appropriations) in late August, before it goes to the floor to be voted on. Hundreds of CA cities and dozens of CA counties are opposing the bill but that has not slowed down its passage.
For a better understanding of what's at stake, listen to the interview with Mary Beth Brangan who was interviewed about SB 649 on Tuesday, July 18, on radio station KPFA at 1 pm Pacific Time (Your Own Health and Fitness). You can listen via the internet by going to www.kpfa.org where the program is available on their archives. Mary Beth and her husband Jim Heddle have done an amazing amount of video work exposing and warning about much corporate environmental destruction, via their organization Ecological Options Network.
If you live in CA please contact Assembly members (starting with you own Assembly member, followed by Gov. Jerry Brown who has veto power, followed by Assembly Appropriations committee members, followed by any other Assembly member you have time to call) and tell them to OPPOSE SB 649. Since CA legislators will be on summer break for a month beginning July 21, the next month is an ideal time to meet with your Assembly person in their district office to let them know why this bill must be stopped.

Mary Beth Brangan, director of the Ecological Options Network, discusses 5G (the fifth generation of wireless technology) and California Senate Bill 649 limiting local control over the next generation of wireless technology and its implications for human and environmental health--and democracy.

Dear Neighbors and Friends after Verizon dropped the application on Arlington Avenue in 2016 they are back!  Many of us in the neighborhood are concerned about the harmful effects of constant exposure to radio-frequency, the undemocratic process of approval, and the nuisance this installation will cause on an already burdened neighborhood.

If you are concerned and want to hear more please attend this meeting!

Originally, the Verizon consultant was scheduled to come and present their plan but they have cancelled due to what he called, a need "to make minor modifications". They will show the community their plan in September, but now is time for the community to come up with our own plan!

Community Meeting to discuss the Verizon cell installation planned for the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at 5812 San Pablo Avenue at Stanford and Organize.

Please Come!
Tuesday, July 18th at  The Charles Porter Golden Gate Recreation Center, at 1075 62 nd Street ( in back of the baseball field on San Pablo),  6:30 to 8:00 pm.

The installation proposed would include 12 cell antennas  (generating radio frequency 24/7) installed on the roof facing both Stanford and San Pablo Avenue, and a generator including gas lines on the street level located in the garage.

Facts:  Once a cell installation is approved and installed it is there forever and the telecom company, in this case Verizon,  has rights to the roof. It becomes the # 1 choice for telecom companies looking to add antennas.  (think cell antenna farm, 24/7 EMF)

This installation is less than one hundred feet from residents, places of worship and sanctuary as well as a martial arts studio serving children.

Safety guidelines for antennas and towers are based on The Federal Communications Act  of 1996.  Though many other countries,  and scientists from around the world  recognize the health risks of non-thermal radiation, including cancer,  municipalities in the United States  are not allowed to deny a cell installation based on  health risks.

Telecommunication corporations  pay churches, schools, and businesses to lease their roofs for installations. ( It’s hard to turn away thousands of dollars especially when you don’t realize the impact on health and safety. )

Don’t wait for Verizon to show up on a telephone pole outside your home!

VERIZON withdraws their application, a victory for the people!

It's been a year since an organized group of  neighbors from the Golden Gate went to the City of Oakland Planning Commission to oppose Verizon's Macro Telecommunications facility planned for  960 Arlington Avenue in our residential neighborhood. In May of 2015, the commission criticized Verizon and made the bold decision not to approve the plan outright, but rather approval was conditional on Verizon completing a more thorough Alternative Site Analysis and making adjustments requiring the generator to be placed inside the building and not on the roof.  Several planners expressed their concern that the facility would expose the community to unsafe levels of EMFs. For the last year we waited, watching for this project to re-appear on the commission's meeting agenda, thinking any month we would need to reorganize to argue against the plan and that we would eventually go before the City Council. The permitting sign from the city  remained in place, a scary reminder of the battle before us.

We contacted the City Planner throughout the year whose response was,  " Verizon will return.  I'll give you two weeks notice before the Planning Commission meeting."  On May 19th of 2016, with some trepidation,  I e-mailed the City Planner who replied, "Verizon withdrew their application."  I couldn't believe what I was reading.  I asked what was the reason and his response was, "they didn't say why".  Our group took a collective inhale and a long exhale, relieved at the outcome. We realize this is the culmination of our group's organized effort which included some of the following;  a community meeting with Verizon, the City planner, and about 35 neighbors,  a demonstration and march to the local Verizon store, a petition with over 200 signatures, numerous letters and phone calls to city officials and Verizon, hours spent combing through the City of Oakland Wireless Ordinance, consulted an electrical engineer, a written editorial to the East Bay Express and an interview on KPFA radio station.

We spoke with many people who fought similar battles.  Some of the people we would like to thank are:  Josh Hart of Stop Smart Meters for encouraging us to protest Verizon and also try to work with the owner of the building,  and Professor Joel Moskowitz for your dedicated research.  But where will Verizon go next? We have no way of knowing what happened but what we did notice in the last year was several telecom companies leasing utility poles from PG&E and mounting 2 antennas on each pole.  This way they avoid the need for a public notice, ( wait isn't the sidewalk a public domain?) and the public's involvement in the process.  Verizon will or has gone somewhere. The planning process is not democratic and favors corporations coming into our neighborhoods and having control over public space. I know there are many struggles occurring all over the country like this one. Hopefully what we learned and the actions we took can help others in their organizing efforts.

Thank you to all the individuals
and groups who supported us.

On behalf of the Golden Gate neighbors,
with gratitude,
Deborah Yaffe and
Greg Henricks

Speak Out Against California State Assembly Bill 57

We are very concerned about the latest takeover by the Wireless Industry, California State Assembly Bill AB 57.  This bill gives the wireless industry super-rights, not intended by either Congress or the FCC and special state-level rights intended to make it almost impossible for the public to effectively argue against cell sites that are detrimental to community aesthetics and health. Communities need a voice in this process.

Right now, our community in North Oakland, the Golden Gate, is battling a Macro Telecommunications Facility planned for a residential neighborhood. We have organized and pushed this plan back several times, due to flaws in the plan. We have worked with Verizon and the City of Oakland asking that the needs and desires of the community be considered. If AB 57 was law we would not have this chance to speak out. Telecommunications law is already heavily biased in favor of the Telecommunications Industry. It has been shocking to see our needs as tax payers are not fairly represented by the government whose mandate is to protect the health and safety of it's citizens. We are part of a growing number of communities who are asking for a voice in the planning process of telecommunications sites. This bill would take away what little impact communities have to engage in the planning process.

Please speak out against AB 57.

A Delay Is a Victory!

A delay is a victory! The Planning Commission almost had enough votes to deny the plan, but at the last minute asked for modifications instead, which in and of itself is historic because usually they just approve cell antenna requests.  There was surprising support on the Planning Commission, including one commissioner, Jahaziel Bonilla, who said something like, "No way I'm allowing this to be sited in a residential community until it can be proved that there is no negative health effects"!

Another commissioner, Jahmese Myres, pulled us aside after the meeting and said "we've seen this so many times, over and over again.  You need to organize citywide and bring a lot of people to the City council and demand a sensible wireless ordinance."

Other Commissioners didn't like the lax "alternative site analysis" that Verizon did. So Verizon has been instructed to do a better one, and they also have to make aesthetic improvements on the current proposed site, and we believe they have to do a better propagation study proving that there is a "significant gap in coverage" in our area (we don't believe there is).  Then it will go back to the Planning Commission, maybe in a month or two.  We think it'll probably pass, but maybe not!

Thank you to all the neighbors who came down to provide passionate protection of our community.  Eleven of us spoke and others gave up their their precious 2 minutes to speakers who needed them, and we needed every minute!  And thank you Deborah Yaffe for taking the lead and setting the tone of fierce defense of our neighborhood against a needless unhealthy intrusion by a corporate predator!

See what a small determined group of people can accomplish?!

The Planning Commission Meeting & Writing to the Planning Commission Opposing Cell Antennas @ 960 Arlington Avenue

Hello Neighbors & Friends,

Well, its come down to this!  The Planning Commission Meeting that we've delayed for a month and a half through our democratic efforts is now upon us, this Wednesday, May 6th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Mark Dunakin Hearing Room 1, One Frank Ogawa Plaza.

Please come if you can!  We need our neighborhood's presence to let the Planning Commission know its not ok to site Cell Antennas in our neighborhood, or any residential neighborhood.   If you don't want to speak that's ok, come anyway and sign up to speak, and then donate your two minutes, because there are several people who will need your generous donation of time to make our case before the Commission.

We need to know how many are coming and donating their time, so here's a link to a "Doodle" app so you can let us know.  Its easy and you don't have to sign up for anything:  go to this link:  https://doodle.com/p9qx4at4dzt3rae4

But even if you can't make it to the Planning Commission Meeting, or if you don't speak, please write to the Commissioners before Wednesday.  We've set up an eMail auto letter at our website.  Go to this link: http://fightthetowers.blogspot.com/p/mr.html or click on the link under Resources to your right:  "Take Action - Write to the Oakland Planning Commission."

We put alot of talking points for you there, but just pick one or two to send if you like, or write your own, then send it off.

Thanks so much!
